I tempi verbali
- Present simple per le verità generali e le abitudini: "if you mix hydrogen and oxygen, you get water". Present continuous per ciò che accade adesso: "what are you doing at the moment?". Va bene anche per i piani già decisi o per un ordine perentorio ("you are not wearing that skirt!").
- Past simple con yesterday, ago, last year: "I saw my cousin three weeks ago", "they bought a TV last year".
- Past continuous per l'azione in corso interrotta da un'altra: "I was walking down the road when I saw...", "he was writing when the boss called".
- Present perfect continuous con since o for: "we have been living here since 1991". Since indica un punto di partenza (since 1991, since I was in Barcelona), for una durata (for 10 years, for three hours).
- Future perfect per ciò che sarà concluso entro un momento: "by the end of the year I will have spent my savings". La forma continua dà "this October I will have been teaching for nine years". Si usa anche per una deduzione sul presente: "they will have gone to bed".
- Used to / would per le abitudini passate: "there used to be a mall", "I would often cycle to work". Il continuous con always esprime un'abitudine fastidiosa: "she was always turning up".
